Well-being in Schools
NCB policy priority for 2008/09
Since September 2007 school governing bodies have been under a
duty to promote the well-being of children and young people, in
terms of the five Every Child Matters outcomes. In October 2008,
the government made a welcome commitment to making Personal,
Social, Health and Economic education (PSHE) a statutory subject
within the National Curriculum, thereby making clear its intention
to enhance the role of the school in promoting children’s
well-being. However, there is still work to be done to ensure the
effectiveness of the forthcoming well-being guidance for schools.
In addition, the practical implications of statutory PSHE and the
actual content of the curriculum are still to be addressed.
NCB is campaigning for:
- Support school leaders to implement Every Child Matters
- Enable school governors to promote well-being, including young
people’s development of life skills
- Ensure effective implementation and delivery of statutory
PSHE
- Monitor well-being in schools
- Reform school inspection and school improvement in line with
Every Child Matters
- Develop and promote participative approaches to learning and
teaching
