Child statistics
NCB’s Library and Information Service collects all key
statistical publications on children published in the UK which are
then abstracted and indexed on our database
ChildData. This includes full references to
statistical information published in Hansard which are often
unavailable elsewhere.
Visitors to the Library can search ChildData and
access our collection directly.

Childstats: Statistics on children and
young people:
a statistical publication free to
NCB Members; now available for non-members to subscribe to by
email.
Finding current statistics on different aspects of children and
young people’s lives is not easy. A Google search may turn up
thousands of links but none may be the one you are looking for.
Some statistics are so well hidden you wonder if you are even meant
to find them. Over the years, NCB’s Library and Information Service
has been identifying key sources of statistical information –
published by government, and also by research institutes and other
independent bodies.
To enable you to access this information more easily, the
Library has produced an extensive guide to the latest facts and
figures. Childstats gives you a digest of
statistical information, arranged under a wide range of subject
headings and with web addresses to get you right to the source.
Coverage includes population, mortality, family income, poverty,
health, substance misuse, early years, teenage pregnancy, children
in care, crime, special educational needs, play, knife crime,
children’s workforce, accidents and road safety.
The publication is updated quarterly to include the latest
government statistical bulletins, figures published in Hansard, and
findings from new research studies. Coverage is primarily of
England. It is available free to NCB members on their

So if you want to know how many children live in lone parent
families, how many families regularly eat a meal together at home,
which children have the greatest risk of living in poverty, take-up
of the MMR vaccine, how many babies are born with sickle cell each
year, how many children are classed as obese, how many young people
regularly feel depressed, how many registered childcare providers
there are, whether a child’s ethnic group makes them more or less
likely to be bullied, which is the most at risk age group for being
a victim of homicide, the peak age of offending, how many young
people have been sent threatening text messages, absence rates in
schools, how many children are granted asylum, favourite sports
activities, current pocket money rates, how many children walk to
school, how many wear cycle helmets, how many children live in
overcrowded housing….
